Personally, I think the ending is quite good because the cliffhanger is quite unique and unexpected.
The good part about the ending is because one cannot anticipate the ending. In some books, somebody can easily tell how the story is going to end, therefore killing the thrill of reading the book.
The author has also managed to create a sad, heartrending ending for the reader.
However, I do think that the ending is a little too sudden. The author could have described the "long, warm room" more for the reader to truly understand.
